The Crimson Petal and the White

The Crimson Petal and the White

Romola Garai (you might remember her from I Capture the Castle) was outstanding in this four part mini-series. She has a captivating screen presence and I expect that she will have a long and accomplished career. She said "as a size 10, I can't make it in Hollywood"; well I say forget Hollywood and stay just the way you are which is near about perfect.

The Crimson Petal and the White is the story about Sugar, a young and celebrated prostitute in London. She is smart and self-educated and working on finding a better life. Gillian Anderson plays her mother, Mrs. Castaway, with sweet wickedness. I enjoyed every moment she was on the screen. I can say the same for the role of Mrs. Fox,, the "rescue lady" played by Shirley Henderson. Amanda Hale as the tortured Agnes Rackham was also profoundly good.

The production was flawed by easy to forgive. One story line was promoted endlessly and then never followed (hand scratching alert). Ultimately, the conclusion is so satisfying and magical, I walked away knowing that the condition of women has changed because of characters like Miss Sugar.

The condition of women during this time is heartbreaking and that was difficult to watch; however, this fine drama both placed you in the middle of dire straights and gave hope simultaneously. Certainly worth the time. It deserves a 4 out of 5.
