Fire in the Belly: The Life and Times of David Wojnarowicz

Fire in the Belly Cynthia Carr

Rarely does a biographer allow the subject's life to tell its own story without clouding the book with opinion and conjecture. Cyntha Carr has presented David's life without clouds and has created a Pultizer worthy biography of the fascinating David Wojnarowicz. Her focus and language are non-judgmental, writing in elegant prose the story of an American boy.

The evolution of Wojnarowicz as an artist weaves an epic story of battles and transcendence. Once again, I feel loss and anger that so much brilliance was taken from us by AIDS.

Reading Fire in the Belly was a profound experience that provided insight into Wojnarowicz's art. Commentary can sometimes sully the viewing experience with someone else's opinion, but au contraire, Carr has expanded the viewing experience by giving us place and time, as well as a view of the process.

5 Stars. A very fine book.
