Fruitvale Station

Coogler, Whittaker

Finished watching Fruitvale Station about 20 minutes ago and I am wowed. The story was presented with as much humanity as I have ever witnessed in a film. We weren't sold on Oscar's reformation, we were offered his humanness. And has a film ever had such a powerful final scene? Nope, Fruitevale Station wins that prize.

The Oscar Grant story needed to be told, thankfully it was put in the hands of Ryan Coogler to do so. The story could have become a Lifetime movie or pedantic, but Coogler created a soft embrace for our national shame and sadness. It is hard to reconcile the fact that this mature film was made by a neophyte.

Leaves me very hopeful about the future of film.
