A Love to Keep

A Love to Keep

This made for TV import from Spain tells the story of a lesbian couple oppressed by societal mores and Franco's rule. Pilar is brutally tortured by psychiatry through electroshock and "deprogramming" while Elvira desperately tries to find her. The use of electroshock to eliminate homosexuality is familiar to those of my generation. We witnessed it in our community and frankly, it was successful in keeping folks in the closet. The film is a telenovella and plays like one. Overly dramatic and brusque in it high handedness, the over the top quality made me cringe quite a few times. The history and story is so important though, I stuck with it. Never again should we suffer such abuse and oppression.
