The Tempest

The Tempest

Julie Taymor, I love you but.... oyyoyyoy....

The Tempest while brilliantly cast and performed was a mess of a film.

Helen Mirren embodied Prospera with subtlety, elegance and power. The gender switch in this lead role worked beautifully. In fact, the actor I live with commented that the whole dynamic of the story made much more sense as maternal. Every single cast member was exceptional, but I want to especially recognize Ben Whishaw who was magnificent as Ariel.

Taymor's penchant for dreamlike sets and costumes worked too. The problem was the stage she selected...much larger than the dialogue delivered by brilliant actors. Not only was the stage too large, it jumped from style to style segmenting the film when it need not. The music was another problem, disconnected and false, never blending with the action. It was a frustrating movie experience although I'm glad I did not miss it. I had to really work to watch the cast perform their art because of the distractions that Taymor threw in the way.

It was great to see Helen Mirren in all those fabulous costumes too.
