Uncle Barb's

I am a gay person before I’m anything else. I’m a gay person before I’m a white person, before I’m a Jew, before I’m a writer, before I’m American, anything.

-Larry Kramer-

I am a woman before I'm anything else.

Fabulous! The Story of Gay Cinema (2006)

Todd Haynes, Rose Troche, Gus Van Sant, Christine Vachon, John Waters, B. Ruby Rich and Billy Porter

Homeland S1

Michael Cuesta is brilliant, fucking brilliant (Spoiler Alert if you have not yet seen Season 1)

The Crimson Petal and the White

The Crimson Petal and the White

Excellent BBC Drama focusing on the condition of women in late 19th Century London. Dark, painful and brilliantly acted to rise above.

Chico & Rita

Just beautiful with a soundtrack to match.

From Fernando Trueba comes another gem of a film, this time it is animated

Those Crazy Oscars

THE OSCARS: Billy Crystal called it "rich people giving golden statues to each other" and that is about it. What a mixed up, messed up collection of elitist bullshit.

Beasts of the Southern Wild

Film of the Year

First time filmmaker Behn Zeitlin and co-writer Lucy Alibar

Tiny Furniture

Lena Dunham's first feature film, Tiny Furniture received good reviews when it toured the film festivals. It languished as "saved" in my Netflix queue for months until Dunham's GIRLS was picked up by Showtime. Got to admit that I was a bit disappointed with Tiny Furniture after reading Dunham on Twitter and the stellar reviews from the festivals.

!Women Art Revolution

A lifetime of searching for women's work in our common culture has left me furious and disdainful of modern America. It is not much better now than it was in 1984 when on a road trip to Colorado I cursed and ranted at the radio because of the absence of women performers. On the way home from work yesterday, I did the same.

I have to thank TheReelCharlie for this step outside my usual comfort zone for a very good film.

The Guard

Brendon Gleeson The Guard (Garda)

The Guard is profane, rude and on the surface racist, sexist and homophobic,

but the absurdity of those isms is the real point.
